Columbus Crew Fire Coach Henrik Rydstrom Less than Halfway Through His Debut Season
The club says the change follows a 3-7-4 start and leaves Laurent Courtois to guide a team still four points from a playoff spot.
On Sunday, the Columbus Crew relieved head coach Henrik Rydstrom of his duties, naming Laurent Courtois as interim head coach. The club also parted ways with Assistant Coach Theodor Olsson and Analyst Mak Pakhei.
Columbus Crew General Manager Issa Tall stated the club has "not capitalized on opportunities or produced the results that our Club and supporters deserve." The team holds a 3-7-4 record, ranking 13th in the Eastern Conference and 26th in the Supporters Shield standings.
Courtois rejoined the organization as First Team Assistant Coach on January 13, 2026, and previously guided CF Montreal to a playoff berth in 2024. He earned the inaugural MLS NEXT Pro Coach of the Year award in 2022 after leading Crew 2 to a league title.
Facing a quick turnaround, the club hosts New York City FC on Wednesday in the 2026 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals. The squad then welcomes Atlanta United FC on Sunday before Major League Soccer pauses for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With 20 regular-season matches remaining, the club sits four points out of a playoff spot. Tall expressed confidence in a successful transition under Courtois, citing his extensive familiarity with the organization's culture, players, and the league.
Henrik Rydström got 14 games in MLS.
That was enough for Columbus Crew – who fired the Swede.
– A change was very necessary, says the club's general manager Issa Tall to The Athletic.
