Columbia University data breach impacts nearly 870,000 individuals
NEW YORK CITY, USA, AUG 8 – Nearly 870,000 current and former students, applicants, and employees had financial, academic, and personal data exposed in a politically motivated cyberattack on Columbia University.
- On August 08, 2025, Columbia University, an Ivy League institution, disclosed an unauthorised party accessed data affecting 868,969 individuals.
- Following an IT system outage, investigations revealed the attacker exploited unpatched single sign-on vulnerabilities to access a limited portion of the network between May 16 and June 2025, detected on July 8, 2025.
- According to internal records, the stolen files include bank account and routing numbers, GPAs, test scores, and other personal data, verified by Bloomberg’s review.
- On August 7, the university began notifications and partnered with Kroll, LLC to provide two years of free credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity theft protection, while warning of scammers.
- The breach underscores escalating cybersecurity risks for educational institutions with aging systems, and federal guidelines could impose fines up to $1.5 million per affected student, prompting universities nationwide to reassess their defenses.
