Colorado Parks and Wildlife working to euthanize second wolf from troubled Copper Creek pack
PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO, JUL 28 – Colorado Parks and Wildlife aims to reduce livestock losses after confirming seven attacks by the Copper Creek wolf pack since March, with the first wolf lethally removed in May.
- In a July 25 letter, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said it is attempting to euthanize a second wolf from the Copper Creek pack after a calf was killed July 18 in Pitkin County.
- Since March, the Copper Creek pack has been linked to seven of eight livestock depredations in Pitkin County, prompting CPW to consider lethal control efforts.
- According to special 10 regulations, CPW denied Pitkin County ranchers a chronic depredation permit and cited authority to euthanize wolves involved in livestock attacks.
- According to CPW, it will only euthanize wolves it is confident were involved to change pack behavior while preserving reproductive potential.
