Coinbase's corporate customers can now accept payments from AI agents

Coinbase says businesses can now accept USDC from AI agents through its new x402 protocol, while developers get tools to add agent payments in 3 lines of code.

  • On July 23, 2026, Coinbase announced that businesses can now accept USDC payments directly from AI agents using the x402 protocol, bridging a critical gap in the emerging agentic economy.
  • Coinbase argued that most online payment systems assume "a human clicking the button," leaving autonomous software underserved; Base documentation traffic surpassed human usage for the first time in June.
  • The Coinbase Developer Platform introduced an SDK enabling builders to add x402 payment acceptance to any API, Model Context Protocol server, or web service in 3 lines of code.
  • Users can now set conditional trading commands for agents, such as "buy ETH if it dips 5%," allowing autonomous execution based on live market data.
  • Sid Coelho-Prabhu, Head of Coinbase Business, said the company is "delivering that experience for the new online agentic economy," building on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments support launched in May.
