US close to allowing Anthropic to restore Fable 5 model, Axios reports
Axios reported the move follows a two-week standoff as US officials weigh security risks from advanced AI models.
The Trump administration is nearing a decision to restore public access to Anthropic's Fable 5 model next week, following a partial reversal on Friday that allowed a limited release of Mythos 5 to select organizations.
A two-week standoff triggered by an export-control directive earlier this month forced Anthropic to block foreign access to both models, while the Pentagon designated the company a "supply-chain risk to national security" over surveillance concerns.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent helped negotiate the resolution, while the administration directed OpenAI to limit its GPT-5.6 preview to government-approved partners on Friday.
OpenAI expressed concern after the Friday release, stating that "government access process should not become the long-term default" and warning that restrictions block essential tools from developers and cyber defenders.
Anthropic and OpenAI are now advocating for a permanent review mechanism, committing to work with the administration to develop a "repeatable process for future model releases" to stabilize the volatile regulatory environment.
