Claire Valdez wins Democratic nomination for U.S. House in New York's 7th Congressional District
The democratic socialist assemblywoman defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso after winning support from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
- On Tuesday, democratic socialist Assemblywoman Claire Valdez won the Democratic primary for the seat of retiring U.S. Rep. Nydia Velazquez, defeating Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso with endorsements from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.
- Mamdani, whose first six months in office have drawn praise from establishment Democrats and President Donald Trump, promoted a slate of congressional candidates to shift the Democratic Party left on Gaza and economic issues.
- Mamdani-Backed former city Comptroller Brad Lander defeated incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Goldman on Tuesday. All three Mamdani candidates have promised to "abolish ICE," condemn the "genocide" in Israel, and "tax the rich."
- House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries downplayed the influence of Mamdani's candidates, stating on Capitol Hill that a handful of primaries will not reshape the 215-member House Democratic caucus. Jeffries said, "We have agreed to strongly disagree."
- The primary results place Valdez in a strong position for November in the heavily Democratic district covering parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Democrat Jack Schlossberg, grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, competes for a seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler.
