Judge Postpones Civil Trial over Deadly Collapse of Baltimore's Key Bridge After Late Settlements
Last-week settlements resolved most remaining claims, and U.S. District Judge James Bredar delayed the trial to weigh further legal arguments.
On Monday, U.S. District Judge James Bredar granted a motion to delay the civil trial over the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse after a flurry of last-minute settlements resolved most pending claims.
The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, 2024, prompted lawsuits against the Dali owner and operator, Synergy Marine and Grace Ocean, alleging negligence and failure to maintain seaworthy conditions.
Families of the six construction workers killed and one survivor reached confidential settlements last week, resolving wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits. Lawyer Chris Stewart called the resolution "bittersweet" for families.
Judge Bredar expressed frustration about the timing of settlements, stating "I'm venting on behalf of the public and the court," before postponing proceedings indefinitely to explore further resolutions.
Unresolved claims from Baltimore and businesses remain pending, while the Dali's operators contest liability under an 1851 maritime law that could cap damages at roughly $44 million.
