City of Victoria issues warning after owl attacks same person twice in three days
City officials installed warning signs after the same person was attacked twice in three days, saying barred owl incidents are usually territorial.
On Thursday, The City of Victoria issued a public warning after a walker was attacked by a barred owl twice in three days along a shared pedestrian and bike pathway.
Adult owls engage in "territory enforcement" as they establish new territory or protect existing space, The City says, explaining the typical cause of such attacks.
Warning signs now mark the shared pedestrian and bike walkway on Dallas Road between Douglas Road and Beacon Hill Park Road to raise public awareness.
This marks the first time The City has installed such warning signs, which officials will remove once the owl's aggressive activity subsides.
According to The Canadian Wildlife Federation, the barred owl is a large species with no ear tufts found throughout British Columbia and the central Prairies.
