B.C. NDP MLAs Meet to Decide New Interim Leader After Devastating Loss
The interim leader will organize a membership vote after the party lost 19 seats and fell to official opposition, Niki Sharma said.
On Thursday, Oct. 29, NDP MLAs met to select an interim leader following an election defeat that handed the Conservatives a majority government for the first time in nearly a century.
Former premier David Eby apologized to the caucus on Wednesday, while Vancouver-Hastings MLA Niki Sharma told reporters the snap election was "obviously a mistake."
"There's no sugarcoating it, it was a tough day," said Sharma, as the caucus reflected on losing excellent MLAs and resolved to serve British Columbians as the official opposition.
Langford-Highlands MLA Ravi Parmar expressed anticipation for spending more time with constituents after his tenure on Eby's cabinet, calling it his "biggest priority."
When the party selects an interim leader, that person will oversee a leadership election where party membership can participate in choosing the NDP's permanent leader.
