Drawn Lot Decides Mayor of Lytton, B.C., After Votes Are Tied at 45 Each
The tie was decided by lot after a judicial recount confirmed each candidate received 45 votes, officials said.
On Tuesday, October 27, Jennifer Thoss won the mayoral election in the Village of Lytton after a judicial recount confirmed a tied vote and officials drew her name from a container to break the deadlock.
The election, held on October 17, resulted in a tie between Thoss and incumbent Denise O'Connor, with both candidates receiving 45 votes in a race decided by a recount that produced the same outcome.
Following a judicial recount in Kamloops, the Village of Lytton's election procedure bylaw and the Local Government Act required officials to resolve the tie by drawing lots; Thoss's name was drawn from a container.
Thoss, previously a councillor since 2022, replaces O'Connor, who was first elected mayor in 2022, and will now lead the community through its ongoing recovery from a 2021 wildfire.
Shannon Story, chief election officer for the Village of Lytton, noted that ties are rare but statistically more possible in smaller municipalities; Lytton has only 198 registered voters according to CivicInfo BC.
