Liberals vote to keep B.C. tanker ban in place
MPs voted along party lines as the Liberals preserved the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act, which bars tankers carrying more than 12,500 metric tonnes of crude oil.
The Liberal government voted today to keep the British Columbia oil tanker ban, defeating a Conservative bill that would have repealed the legislation.
Prohibitions under the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act restrict tankers to carrying more than 12,500 metric tonnes of crude oil along the northern coast of B.C.
Conservatives argued the law undermines Canada's prosperity by limiting potential oil exports from the northern coast to international markets.
Alberta originally envisioned the proposed Pacific Link oil pipeline exporting from the northern coast but revised the route south to respect the ban.
On July 2, 2026, Prime Minister Mark Carney struck a deal with B.C. to maintain the ban, voting in person today as MPs split along party lines in the House of Commons.
