Road Closures, Increased Transit Service Planned During FIFA World Cup in Toronto
Toronto’s plan prioritizes public transit and road closures to manage transportation for an expected 300,000 visitors during six World Cup matches and the FIFA Fan Festival.
On Thursday, Toronto unveiled its Mobility Plan for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, outlining strategies to manage traffic and support accessible travel with only 78 days until the opening game.
With the city expecting about 300,000 visitors, officials designed the strategy to handle massive crowds, including 45,000 spectators per match at BMO Field and up to 20,000 at the FIFA Fan Festival.
The city will prioritize public transit, walking, and cycling while eliminating public parking near the stadium, Exhibition Place, and Fort York National Historic Site to maintain efficient operations.
Sharon Bollenbach, executive director for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Toronto Secretariat, confirmed the proposal involves a coordinated approach with agencies like the Toronto Transit Commission and the Toronto Police Service.
Municipal leaders will review the proposal on Monday, March 30, ahead of final consideration by Toronto City Council during its April 22 to 24 meeting, as required by the Host City Agreement.
