The subsidiary of the American banana company Chiquita Brands announced this Thursday that it fired the almost 1,200 workers who were still working at its headquarters in Panama, after the company ceased operations in the country in May in the middle of a strike. The Panamanian subsidiary of U.S. banana company Chiquita announced on Thursday that it would lay off its remaining 1,189 daily wage workers in the country, after the government approved the decision. The layoffs come months after previous waves of mass layoffs related to strikes that began in April at the company's Central American facilities. The layoffs are effective today, it said.

The banana company received authorization from the Ministry of Labor and Workforce Development, which allows dismissals "for economic reasons." See more

The mass dismissal originated due to an illegal strike initiated by the workers at the end of April this year.
