Chinese Court Sentenced Former Mayor of Wuhan City to 14 Years in Prison for Bribery – WTOP News
The court said Zhou accepted more than 60.5 million yuan and used his posts to help others with business and approvals.
On Saturday, the Shangqiu Intermediate People's Court sentenced former Wuhan mayor Zhou Xianwang to 14 years in prison after convicting him of bribery. The ruling concludes a case spanning over two decades of alleged financial misconduct.
Prosecutors alleged Zhou used his various positions to assist others with administrative approvals and business operations between 2003 and 2025. He accepted money and valuables exceeding $9 million, an amount the court labeled exceptionally large.
The court fined Zhou 5 million yuan and noted his sentence could be reduced because he confessed and cooperated with authorities. Most proceeds were recovered, strengthening the mitigating factors.
While Zhou faced public criticism for his handling of the early COVID-19 outbreak in Hubei Province, the court did not address those events. Proceedings focused exclusively on bribery and financial crimes.
This sentencing reflects broader government anti-corruption drives, a signature policy of Chinese leader Xi Jinping since 2012. Thousands of officials have been purged during these campaigns, including high-profile political rivals.
