China’s top diplomat urges stable ties with India as military tensions simmer
China's top diplomat Wang Yi met with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar at the ASEAN meetings in Jakarta to discuss stabilizing bilateral ties and easing tensions along their shared border. They emphasized the need for mutual support and cooperation instead of suspicion.
The border between India and China, which stretches over 3,800km, has been a source of conflict, including a brief war in 1962 and a deadly clash in 2020. Despite previous border agreements and improved ties, the situation remains fragile and dangerous, requiring joint efforts to find an acceptable solution.
China's top Communist Party diplomat Wang Yi urged India to focus on “common interests” and join China “halfway” to defuse tensions at the border, China's foreign ministry said on Saturday.
