China will send giant pandas to Atlanta again
The 10-year cooperation includes facility upgrades and technical guidance as China renews panda diplomacy with U.S. zoos, officials said.
- On Thursday, the China Wildlife Conservation Association announced a decade-long agreement to send two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, to Zoo Atlanta for research and conservation cooperation.
- Zoo Atlanta's previous 25-year conservation partnership concluded in 2024, when longtime pair Lun Lun and Yang Yang returned to China with their two youngest offspring in October.
- The Chinese government has established 67 panda reserves to improve habitat connectivity, while the International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies wild giant pandas as "vulnerable" species under strict protection.
- President and CEO Raymond B. King stated Zoo Atlanta is "delighted and honored to yet again be trusted as stewards of this treasured species" as facility upgrades proceed.
- This announcement precedes U.S. President Donald Trump's mid-May visit to Beijing, where he expects to discuss trade with President Xi Jinping; China's panda loan program remains a tool of soft-power diplomacy.
