China has nominated health official Song Li as WHO head
On Thursday, China nominated senior health official Song Li to lead the World Health Organization, positioning her to succeed incumbent Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Beijing has actively sought greater influence within United Nations institutions in recent years, contrasting sharply with the United States under President Donald Trump withdrawing from multiple international bodies.
Song brings 20 years of expertise in maternal and child health policy and played active roles in national responses to major public health crises including SARS, bird flu, and COVID-19.
Six candidates representing Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Qatar, Botswana, Indonesia, and Spain have also publicly announced their bids, with the World Health Assembly set to elect the next director-general in May.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated the nomination demonstrates "China's firm support for multilateralism," though the Trump administration has repeatedly accused the WHO of harboring bias toward China.
