China willing to restart dialogue with Canada in Beijing, minister says
Canada and China aim to stabilize relations and resolve trade disputes including tariffs on electric vehicles through renewed dialogue and upcoming leader meetings, officials said.
- On Friday, Anita Anand met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, reopening communication channels and reviving a strategic partnership forum to stabilise relations and resolve trade issues.
- Longstanding trade and diplomatic rifts stem from Beijing imposing tariffs earlier this year after Ottawa’s 100 per cent levy on Chinese electric vehicles, following Huawei executive arrest and two Canadians jailed years ago.
- Anand spent two hours in talks with Wang Yi during her first trip since May and said China’s interest in energy talks follows record oil sales to Chinese buyers in recent months, while Maninder Sidhu and Heath MacDonald will visit in the near future.
- Both governments are preparing for a possible meeting this month between Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, and President Xi Jinping, President of China, though Anand would not confirm late October APEC summit plans.
- Beyond tariffs, the visit positions Canada and China to cooperate on security, economic priorities, international health, climate change and mobility, while The Globe and Mail gained access to China this week.
