China calls Taiwan's annual military drills a 'wasteful charade'
China’s defense ministry said Taiwan’s 10-day Han Kuang drills were a publicity stunt as the People’s Liberation Army stayed on high alert.
- On Friday, China's defense ministry dismissed Taiwan's annual Han Kuang military drills as a "wasteful charade" that "stoked war panic," marking Beijing's first official comment on the 10-day exercises since they began last week.
- Taiwan began the 10-day exercise last week as Beijing ramps up its military presence around the island, with the democratically governed territory rejecting China's sovereignty claims and maintaining defensive readiness.
- The exercises rehearsed scenarios for breaking a maritime blockade and, for the first time, tested measures to slow mobile internet, demonstrating Taiwan's preparation for potential Chinese military attempts to seize the island.
- Chinese defense ministry spokesperson Chen Xi accused the Democratic Progressive Party of "recklessly stoked war panic," while The People's Liberation Army remains on high alert to "counter separatism and external interference," he said.
- Although China has never renounced using force to bring Taiwan under its control, Beijing says it prefers "peaceful reunification" to maintain stability across the Taiwan Strait and safeguard national sovereignty.
