MISSOURI, AUG 7 – Tonia Haddix pleaded guilty to perjury and obstruction of justice for faking Tonka the chimpanzee's death to avoid surrendering him, resulting in a 46-month prison sentence.
- On Thursday, Tonia Haddix, star of HBO's Chimp Crazy, was sentenced in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri in St. Louis to 46 months in prison after pleading guilty to perjury and obstruction of justice.
- In 2018, PETA first considered legal action against Haddix after she took ownership of seven chimpanzees, and MPF was ordered to transfer them amid a lawsuit, with Haddix falsely claiming Tonka’s death.
- Just after Judge Catherine D. Perry ruled in Haddix’s favor, inspectors uncovered a second chimp in her basement two weeks after her guilty plea, with HBO footage used as evidence.
- Owing more than $224,000 in attorneys’ fees, Tonia Haddix faces significant financial penalties and a sentence including three years of supervised release, Brittany Peet said, 'support the Captive Primate Safety Act.'
- Calling herself the `Dolly Parton of chimps`, Haddix was arrested again in late July for harboring another chimpanzee and is currently held in Phelps County pending transfer.
