First Phase of Mount Mercy-St. Ambrose Merger Complete
- On Friday in Cedar Rapids, St. Ambrose University took the first official step in their merger by becoming the parent institution of Mount Mercy University.
- Facing lower student numbers and a $3 million shortfall in 2023, Mount Mercy entered into an 18-month arrangement for St. Ambrose to take over ownership while continuing to uphold Mount Mercy’s distinct campus, branding, and programs.
- Twenty integration teams from both campuses worked on various operational areas to enable the combination, which aims to honor founding missions and create a more sustainable, student-centered institution.
- St. Ambrose President Amy Novak called this a "defining moment" and committed to maintaining tuition and scholarships, while emphasizing that "together, we are all stronger."
- The merger awaits final U.S. Department of Education approval expected next summer, after which the universities plan to fully combine by summer 2026 to ensure long-term viability.
