Chicago Police Investigating Reported Sexual Assault at University of Chicago Fraternity House
Witness statements and video led investigators to a suspect who is not affiliated with the university, and the chapter has suspended events.
On Tuesday, the University of Chicago identified and banned a non-student person of interest in a sexual assault reported early Sunday at an Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house in Hyde Park.
The 21-year-old victim, not affiliated with the university, reported being assaulted around 1:50 a.m. during a party at the AEPi house before someone intervened, prompting the suspect to flee.
Witnesses described the suspect as a 5-foot-7 South Asian man with curly hair on top and shorter sides, wearing a black T-shirt and jogging pants; university officials said this identification was corroborated by video evidence and witness statements shared with the Chicago Police Department.
Alpha Epsilon Pi's national organization said it is cooperating with the investigation and instructed the chapter to suspend all events, stating the fraternity "unconditionally opposes" conduct considered sexual assault or harassment.
The incident occurs amid nationwide scrutiny of campus sexual assault, intensified by a 2024 Cornell University fraternity case involving alleged gang rape, placing pressure on universities to reform safety protocols.
A 21-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted by a man at a frat house near the University of Chicago on Sunday morning, according to the Chicago Police Department.
