SK Chief Vows to Speed up Construction of New Chip Cluster in Southwest
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each plan to invest about 400 trillion won to build two chip fabs apiece in the cluster, officials said.
- On Friday, Group Chairman Chey Tae-won visited Gwangju Air Base, announcing that SK Hynix plans to accelerate construction of a new semiconductor cluster in southwestern South Korea to meet rapidly growing global chip demand.
- Chey noted that semiconductor demand is growing significantly, with the proposed Gwangju facility planned at two-thirds the size of the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, which SK previously accelerated by 12 years.
- Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each plan to invest 400 trillion won to build two chip fabrication plants apiece on the site, which will span about 8.26 million square metres.
- Construction timelines remain undetermined, as the company must align development with government infrastructure plans for water and power; Chey stated, "If necessary, it seems we may have to build in parallel."
- While the group still needs to determine the construction start date, Chey confirmed the company intends to break ground as soon as possible, stating, "I can't give an answer today on when that will be.
