Murder Charge for Seven Teens After Serious Assault
Police say the victim suffered life-threatening injuries before dying, and seven more teenagers were later charged after the stolen BYD was found nearby.
On Thursday, seven teenagers had their charges upgraded to murder following a serious assault in Kelvin Grove, where the 27-year-old victim died at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital on August 6.
Police allege a group of teens assaulted a 27-year-old man on Victoria Park Road on July 24 and stole his blue BYD Shark 6, which was found abandoned on Barter Avenue in Holland Park the next day.
The seven teens, aged 14 to 17, face potential life sentences under the Liberal National government's controversial "adult crime, adult time" laws introduced after the 2024 state election.
Magistrate Anne Thacker remanded a 17-year-old boy in custody during a Brisbane Magistrates Court appearance on Friday, with six co-accused also remanded and matters adjourned until September 1.
Police have renewed an appeal for dash cam and CCTV footage from July 24 between 9:30pm and 10:30pm on Victoria Park Road and between 11:30pm and 11:50pm on Barter Avenue. Investigators are also seeking two potential witnesses seen driving in the area.
