Chanel buys historic French shirtmaker Charvet, ending 188 years of independence
Chanel will run Charvet as an independent business, and the French shirtmaker’s 2025 revenue was not disclosed after the acquisition, executives said.
- On Thursday, Chanel announced the acquisition of Charvet, ending 188 years of independent ownership at the renowned Paris-based shirtmaker. The deal brings the historic brand under the luxury group's guardianship.
- Chanel creative director Matthieu Blazy initiated the deal after collaborating with Charvet for his debut collection last October, which proved successful with clients. Discussions with Charvet directors Jean-Claude and Anne-Marie Colban followed.
- Founded in 1838, Charvet is the world's oldest shirtmaker, having dressed Winston Churchill and Marcel Proust. The company operates a workshop in Saint-Gaultier and a store on Place Vendôme, employing 100 total staff.
- Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Fashion Activities at Chanel, confirmed Charvet will operate as an independent business under Chanel's ownership. The group plans to maintain exclusivity, rejecting global expansion to preserve specialized manufacturing.
- The acquisition deepens a historic bond rooted in founder Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, who purchased shirts for her partner, Arthur "Boy" Capel. This aligns with Chanel's strategy of acquiring specialist ateliers to safeguard rare artisanal skills.
