Mauritius: Chagos Archipelago - Prime Minister Ramgoolam Chairs Meeting On High-Level Visit to Chagos Archipelago
The Prime Minister, Dr the Hon Navinchandra Ramgoolam, GCSK, FRCP, chaired today a meeting on the visit to be undertaken by a high-level delegation to the Chagos Archipelago, following the landmark Agreement signed on 22 May 2025 between the Government of the Republic of Mauritius and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland concerning the Chagos Archipelago including Diego Garcia.
On May 22, Britain signed an agreement with Mauritius to return the Chagos Islands, which it had bought many years ago, to Mauritius, while leasing the largest island in the group. The opposition calculated based on the contract that the cost of leasing the islands could be nine times the cost announced by the government.
The former Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth expressed some concerns about the Chagos Archipelago yesterday, 28 May, at the Sun Trust. "The truth is that the English have a veto over everything that is happening and what we want to do in the Chagos Archipelago," he said.
