CERN’s CMS Spots Leptons Scattering From Protons After 50-year Search

The CMS experiment observed, for the first time, leptons—electrons and muons—emitted from protons scattering off one another, using data collected between 2016 and 2026. Predicted by the standard model, these lepton constituents originating from the protons had never been experimentally observed before.
