CERN upbeat as China halts particle accelerator mega-project
China's pause on the $17 billion CEPC removes major competition, boosting CERN's hopes for Future Circular Collider approval by 2028 and operation in the late 2040s.
- After Beijing put the CEPC on ice, the CERN Council issued a very positive opinion on November 7 about the FCC feasibility study, giving CERN a clearer runway, Fabiola Gianotti said.
- Ten years ago China announced the 100-kilometre Circular Electron Positron Collider plan, but the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently chose a smaller, lower-energy collider, Gianotti said.
- Priced at around $17 billion, the Future Circular Collider has yet to win approval from CERN's 25 member states.
- If all goes well, the project could be approved in 2028, with the Large Hadron Collider expected to run until around 2040 and the FCC operational by the end of the 2040s.
- Wang Yifang said China may re-submit CEPC in 2030 or join the FCC if it is approved, while Co-cernes argue the pause casts doubt on the project's scientific priority.
