Population Census to Be Conducted From January 25 to February 28 Except in Snow-Bound and Poll-Bound States

Self-enumeration opens Jan. 10 before the nationwide count begins, and officials say census data will remain confidential under the Census Act.

  • On Friday, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced the 2027 population census will be conducted through house-to-house enumeration from January 25 to February 28, 2027, across most states and Union Territories.
  • Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan issued the notification under the Census Act, 1948, establishing 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027, as the official reference date for determining the population count.
  • Residents may complete optional self-enumeration between January 10 and January 24, 2027, before the main enumeration begins. A revisional round will follow from March 1 to March 5, 2027.
  • The enumeration excludes poll-bound states Manipur, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand, as well as snow-bound regions including Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, and Kashmir, until further notice.
  • Earlier on October 26, Registrar General of India directed units not to release collected population figures to the press, as information remains protected under the Census Act.
