Celtics Reunite with Isaiah Thomas, but Not in the Way You'd Expect
Thomas will help evaluate draft and pro prospects as Boston adds West Coast scouting coverage, sources said.
- The 37-year-old Isaiah Thomas has been hired by the Celtics as both a pro and college scout, confirmed yesterday by a team source to MassLive, nine years after being traded to Cleveland for Kyrie Irving.
- Thomas spent parts of three seasons in Boston from 2015-17, earning two All-Star nods in 2016 and 2017 while finishing fifth in NBA MVP voting before a significant hip injury derailed his career during the 2017 playoffs.
- In November 2025 at TD Garden, Thomas said, "It feels like I was here for 10 years...the genuine love that the city, the organization, just the regular fans...I'm forever thankful," while head coach Joe Mazzulla praised his character and legacy.
- Thomas will be based in Seattle, his hometown, serving as a resource for Brad Stevens' basketball operations staff evaluating West Coast talent alongside regional scouts Derek Pierce in Atlanta and Keandre Ashley in Dallas.
- At age 37, Thomas transitions to scouting after considering European opportunities and spending time in the G-League, capitalizing on the culture he helped establish during Boston's rebuild that led to the Celtics' 18th championship in June 2024.
