Police disperse crowds amid ‘disorder’ after Celtic’s Scottish Premiership win
Police said bottles and other missiles were thrown as officers dispersed the crowd after Celtic’s 56th league title celebration turned disorderly.
On Saturday, jubilant Celtic fans descended on Glasgow's Trongate to celebrate the club's 56th Scottish Premiership title, following a 3-1 victory over Hearts where Martin O'Neill's side secured the trophy for a fifth consecutive year.
Police Scotland previously accused Celtic of failing to coordinate official celebrations, though Glasgow City Council disputed this description, despite the club urging supporters to avoid city centre gatherings.
Officers in riot gear moved to disperse the crowd after facing "significant levels of hostility," including bottles thrown during a medical emergency response, while supporters were seen climbing the historic Mercat Cross.
Police Scotland confirmed a number of arrests as they cleared the area for "public safety reasons," while Hearts condemned "shameful" scenes of abuse directed at their players and staff during the match.
Unofficial parties have historically caused damage to the Mercat Cross, with Glasgow City Council paying £73,032 for repairs in 2024, as planners approved converting the nearby six-storey Mercat Building into almost 40 homes.
