Rubio discusses way forward on Ukraine ceasefire with European counterparts
- On May 11, 2025, Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, participated in a telephone discussion with leading diplomats from Europe and Ukraine to address the possibility of achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine.
- The call followed Ukrainian President Zelenskyy's public backing of US President Trump’s push for full and unconditional ceasefire talks in Istanbul scheduled for May 15.
- Leaders including Germany’s Chancellor Merz, France’s Macron, the UK’s Starmer, Poland’s Tusk, and Zelenskyy previously met in Kyiv, reiterating the need for a ceasefire before negotiations.
- State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce conveyed Rubio’s statement that the United States is focused on stopping hostilities swiftly by securing a ceasefire, which would create conditions for diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace.
- The talks could mark the first direct Ukraine-Russia negotiations since early 2022, but ceasefire violations continue amid uncertainty about Russia’s commitment to halt hostilities.
