CBI takes over Suvendu Adhikari aide murder case, forms seven-member SIT
Investigators say the killing was carried out by hired shooters and are tracing money transfers to identify the masterminds behind the plot.
On Monday, the Central Bureau of Investigation took over the murder probe of Chandranath Rath, a close aide to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, forming a seven-member Special Investigation Team led by a DIG-rank officer.
Rath was shot dead on May 6 in Madhyamgram, just three days before Adhikari's swearing-in as chief minister, prompting the West Bengal Police to arrest three suspects from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
A Barasat court remanded the three accused to 13 days of police custody on Monday, while investigators examine UPI transactions and financial trails linked to toll plaza payments to identify masterminds.
Led by a DIG-rank officer from the Delhi CBI, the team comprises seasoned officers from multiple states and has re-registered the FIR to ensure a comprehensive, time-bound investigation into the broader conspiracy.
Investigators suspect at least eight people were involved in the killing amid post-election tensions; Adhikari alleged political motives, while the team probes interstate criminal links behind the "pre-planned murder.
