Public Invited to Amateur Radio Club ‘Field Day’
- Amateur radio enthusiasts from groups such as STARS and SARA will take part in the annual 24-hour ARRL Field Day event beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, at sites including Parker Dam State Park and the Bulloch County Horseman's Arena.
- This annual event, held since 1933, aims to demonstrate how amateur radio functions reliably under any conditions without internet or cellphone infrastructure, especially during disasters or communication outages.
- Operators will set up temporary stations with antennas, power supplies, and a Get On The Air station to invite public participation including children and to showcase STEM concepts.
- Over 31,000 amateur radio enthusiasts from numerous locations across North America participate in Field Day, and STARS president Doug Hess noted that radio operators have traditionally played a vital role in supporting their communities during severe weather events and other emergencies that disrupt essential communication networks.
- The exercise highlights ham radio’s critical emergency communication role and offers public education on technology and community service in preparation for events like a predicted active hurricane season.
