Netflix Wins the ‘Captain Planet’ Adaptation Race — the Very Polluted History of Reviving the ’90s Cartoon Fave
NO LOC, JUL 17 – Netflix teams with Greg Berlanti and Leonardo DiCaprio to revive the 1990s environmental superhero series, with Tara Hernandez writing and Warner Bros. producing the live-action adaptation.
- In a competitive adaptation push, Netflix landed the live-action Captain Planet and the Planeteers series, drawing on Berlanti Productions, Appian Way and Warner Bros. Television.
- Created in 1990 by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner to educate young viewers on environmental issues through superhero adventures, Captain Planet and the Planeteers ran six seasons and spawned action figures, video games and comic books.
- Tara Hernandez will pen the live-action adaptation, while executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman join Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson under Warner Bros. Television.
- Deadline reports Powell is no longer involved, while Jono Matt remains a producer, and Netflix declined to comment on the adaptation.
