Canada rents billboards across US to push anti-tariff messages
- On March 25, a digital billboard displaying the message "Tariffs are a tax on your grocery bill- Paid for by the Government of Canada" was spotted along the Norwood Lateral in Ohio as part of a Canadian government campaign.
- The billboard campaign is a response to tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, including a 25% tariff on imports, excluding energy, from Canada which came into effect on March 4, with the aim of forcing industry back to the United States and reducing the trade gap.
- Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly confirmed that Canada is placing these billboards in red states, including Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and New Hampshire, near major interstates.
- Joly stated the goal of the campaign is to inform Americans about the potential negative impact of tariffs on their livelihoods and wallets, urging them to communicate their opposition to government officials.
- The Canadian Chamber of Commerce and some retailers warn that tariffs will result in higher prices for American consumers, potentially costing tens of thousands of jobs on both sides of the border and harming North America's auto industry, while the campaign has received mixed reactions from American residents.
