Canada's Sarault wins Olympic silver in 1,000m short-track speedskating

Courtney Sarault earned her third medal at the Milan–Cortina 2026 Games despite a late-race error that cost her a gold in the women’s 1,000m short track event.

  • Monday's final in Milan saw Courtney Sarault place second in the women’s 1,000-metre short-track in 1:28.523 seconds.
  • During the final laps, Sarault said, `I didn’t execute my race as well as I had hoped,` after leading most of the race before a wide turn dropped her to third, then she regained second.
  • Coming into Milan, Sarault showed strong form after winning three of four 1,000-metre races on the 2025 World Tour, while the podium was decided by tight times, with Velzeboer winning in 1:28.437 and Gilli taking bronze in 1:28.614.
  • With the silver, Sarault now has three medals at these Games, making her the third Canadian woman to medal in the 1,000m, alongside Nathalie Lambert and Kim Boutin.
  • Her coach Marc Gagnon noted, `From four years ago, I’ve come such a long way,` as Sarault, the 2025-26 ISU Short Track World Tour Crystal Globe champion with six world championship medals, builds her career momentum.
