Canada’s Paula Findlay takes underdog role into Ironman world championship debut
The Canadian Olympian enters her first full-distance race after winning in Lake Placid and says the longer format has renewed her interest in triathlon.
On Saturday, October 10, 2026, 37-year-old Paula Findlay will make her Ironman World Championship debut in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, competing in the 3.8-kilometre swim, 180k bike, and marathon run.
After 20 years competing in shorter triathlons, Findlay felt stale in the sport and decided to test the Ironman distance at Lake Placid, where she won her debut and rejuvenated her passion.
To prepare for Kona's extreme heat and humidity, Findlay trained in the location in September. "I've prepped for the heat sort of artificially in my garage," she said, noting the challenge of acclimatization.
Competing in Kona shifts Findlay's strategy from racing rivals to managing hydration and nutrition in extreme conditions. "I'm a little bit flying under the radar," Findlay said, embracing the pressure-free approach.
Findlay joins Canadian pro field members Tamara Jewett and Danielle Fauteux in Hawaii for the event held in Ironman's birthplace, attracting elite competitors despite the challenging environment.
