Canada is replacing the GST/HST credit with a new benefit
The federal government will deliver $3.1 billion in immediate assistance as the new benefit replaces the GST/HST credit and boosts payments for more than 12 million Canadians.
- On Friday, the Canada Revenue Agency will issue a one-time Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit top-up to more than 12 million eligible Canadians, with payments reaching up to $717.
- The Department of Finance funded this $3.1 billion assistance package under Bill C-19, the Essentials Benefit Act, which replaces the GST credit to provide immediate relief.
- Eligible individuals must have filed their 2024 tax returns to receive the payment; the CRA will distribute funds via direct deposit or mailed cheque.
- Starting in July, Bill C-19 will increase future quarterly payments by 25 per cent for five years, boosting the Essentials Benefit and expanding coverage to additional families.
- Statistics Canada reports real GDP fell 0.1 per cent in the first quarter, signaling a technical recession as annual inflation rose to 2.8 per cent in April.
