Bad News for Bafana Bafana as Benni McCarthy's Kenya Lose
Serhou Guirassy scored the only goal as Guinea earned its first points and tightened the race for the group’s lone remaining AFCON 2027 place.
Guinea defeated Kenya 1-0 in Conakry on Thursday evening, securing the West Africans their first points of the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign and intensifying the battle for Group D's remaining qualification place.
As co-hosts of the Africa Cup alongside Uganda and Tanzania, Kenya is already guaranteed a tournament spot, meaning their results do not directly impact the three-team qualification battle in the Group.
South Africa leads the Group with 6 points after two matches, with coach Pitso Mosimane's side having collected maximum points from victories over Guinea and Eritrea.
Midfielder Serhou Guirassy scored the only goal, giving the West Africans crucial momentum, while Eritrea remains on 1 point after their heavy loss to Bafana Bafana.
The next round of qualifying fixtures will be played in November, when Guinea face Eritrea and South Africa take on Kenya in matches that will reshape the Group's final standings.
