Fire Ban Lands Thursday Across South Coast of B.C.
The expanded prohibition also covers fireworks and burn barrels as fire danger rises across coastal British Columbia, officials said.
Effective Thursday, July 16, at 12 p.m., the BC Wildfire Service will prohibit Category 1, 2, and 3 open fires across the Coastal Fire Centre to reduce human-caused wildfire risks as conditions worsen.
Warming and drying conditions spreading north and west across British Columbia prompted the decision, as rising temperatures and low precipitation are drying fuels across the 13 million hectare Coastal Fire Centre jurisdiction.
Small campfires remain permitted in the Campbell River Forest District, North Island Central Coast Forest District, Haida Gwaii Forest District, and Sunshine Coast Forest District, where conditions remain less severe than elsewhere.
The prohibition also covers fireworks, binary exploding targets, and burn barrels; residents must verify local municipal regulations and report violations by calling 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cell phone.
Restrictions are expected to remain in place until Oct. 31, with conditions continually monitored to protect communities, responders, and forests across British Columbia as wildfire risks persist.
