Campbell's fires exec accused of 'offensive' comments
Campbell's fired its vice president after a secret recording revealed racist and derogatory remarks, with the company condemning the language as inconsistent with its values.
- On Tuesday, The Campbell's Co. fired Martin Bally, then a vice president in Campbell's information security department, after reviewing a secret recording and concluding the voice was his.
- Robert Garza, former Campbell Soup cybersecurity analyst, recorded a restaurant meeting and recently released the audio as part of a lawsuit in Michigan's Wayne County Circuit Court.
- The recording captures allegedly vulgar remarks, including 'We have s--- for f---ing poor people' and 'F---ing Indians don't know a f---ing thing,' with an admission of coming to work under the influence, Bally said.
- Campbell's defended its products and employees, calling the recording's claims 'inaccurate' and 'patently absurd,' and said 'We apologize for the hurt they have caused,' the Campbell's spokesperson added.
- Garza was fired about 20 days later and is seeking damages for wrongful termination and retaliation, while Campbell's says it first learned about the lawsuit and heard portions of the recording on Nov. 20.
