Ottawa army unit head removed as part of social media misconduct probe
OTTAWA, CANADA, JUL 17 – The removal follows allegations of racist, misogynistic, homophobic, and antisemitic posts by soldiers in a social media group, prompting ongoing military and police investigations.
Amid the controversy Lt-Gen Michael Wright removed the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa commanding officer, linking it to a probe into the 'Blue Hackle Mafia' group.
Concerns first raised in December of last year, Wright noted the group's posts included offensive content, and military police reopened their probe on June 27, 2025.
The unit's disciplinary probe and the military police inquiry are ongoing, Wright said, adding that all individuals involved 'will be provided procedural fairness in accordance with the applicable policies'.
In response to the controversy, Wright promised cultural reforms, the Canadian Army will ensure its culture reflects the Canadian Armed Forces' values and ethics, Wright said, adding that the incident damaged the Canadian Army's reputation during modernization efforts.
In recent years the Canadian Armed Forces faced widespread misconduct allegations, culminating in a May 2022 report by retired Supreme Court justice Louise Arbour issuing 48 recommendations for change.
