Hun Manet Briefs Anwar on Cambodia-Thailand Border Dispute
- On June 5, 2025, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai met Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Tea Seiha in Bangkok to discuss border tensions.
- The meeting followed a deadly clash on May 28 in Preah Vihear province and stemmed from the long-standing border dispute where Thailand rejects the International Court of Justice's jurisdiction since 1960.
- Phumtham suggested that both parties pull their troops back to an earlier agreed-upon area close to the Trimuk Pavilion, approximately 150 to 200 meters from the current confrontation site, while Thai authorities assess strategic options internally.
- Phumtham emphasized that he has always opposed any measures that violate Thailand’s sovereignty and cautioned that calls for armed conflict ultimately cause harm to both military personnel and civilians.
- The Thai government reaffirmed commitment to peaceful bilateral negotiations under the 2000 MOU and confirmed the Joint Border Committee meeting will proceed on June 14 to seek resolution.
