Montrealers watch for ghost of Mary Gallagher, said to return every seven years
The annual tradition adds a paranormal investigation, new artwork and tarot readings as residents and visitors keep Montreal folklore alive.
Tonight, June 27, 2026, Haunted Montreal hosts the Haunted Griffintown Ghost Tour, marking the seven-year return of the legend in the Griffintown neighborhood.
Gallagher was decapitated in Griffintown on June 27, 1879, establishing an enduring tragedy that residents and enthusiasts commemorate at the corner of William and Murray streets.
Haunted Montreal founder Donovan King describes the figure as "more than a ghost story," emphasizing she represents a living piece of Montreal folklore preserved by generations.
Programming includes paranormal investigation, tarot readings, and commemorative artwork by Mohawk sculptor Snow, while Rockaberry Griffintown and Alfred Caf serve a "Headless Mary Cocktail."
This seven-year tradition functions as a serious cultural ritual linking the neighborhood's past to its current identity as residents and enthusiasts keep the narrative alive.
