California Woman Fatally Shot After Months of Alleged Stalking, Officials Say
Investigators said the suspect stalked and harassed the victim for months, including tracking her with an Apple AirTag and entering her home.
- On Tuesday, 22-year-old Rohit Rohit shot and killed 38-year-old Shalini Thakur outside a Panera Bread in Sacramento; deputies later found Rohit dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Highway 50.
- Investigators reported that Rohit stalked Thakur since January, using an Apple AirTag to track her vehicle and obtaining an unauthorized key to her apartment, despite deputies urging her to seek protection.
- In an interview on Thursday, Thakur's mother alleged that authorities ignored repeated pleas for help, stating, "Police did not protect my daughter," while the Sacramento County Sheriff confirmed deputies remained in contact with the victim for months.
- The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Friday that Rohit was an undocumented immigrant from India who entered the United States through Arizona in 2023 and was released by federal authorities.
- California's sanctuary state law, 54, limits local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration officials regarding suspects without prior criminal history, as the case raises questions about protective order enforcement.
