California says it will monitor the Justice Department's election watchers next week

  • On Monday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the state will send observers to monitor U.S. Department of Justice election monitors during the Proposition 50 special election on November 4.
  • After GOP complaints about county procedures, the DOJ moved to send election observers to Kern, Fresno, Riverside, Los Angeles and Orange counties following the California Republican Party's request citing alleged ballot issues.
  • The attorney general noted potential state offices and registrars could be used to monitor DOJ observers, saying `I can't name names but there is going to be oversight and accountability` .
  • Bonta warned DOJ monitors could be used to intimidate immigrant voters, and officials noted low turnout might mean some polling places have more monitors than voters deciding on Proposition 50.
  • Fundraising shows a wide gap, with the 'No on Proposition 50' campaign raising about $11 million, raising concerns for the 2026 midterms, Bonta said.
