California regulators approve new rules limiting what replacement tires you can buy for your car

The rules phase in in 2029 and 2033 and could save Californians $1 billion a year on fuel, regulators said.

  • On Monday, the California Energy Commission unanimously approved the nation's first tire efficiency standards, requiring replacement tires sold in California to match the energy efficiency of original equipment by 2033.
  • This action stems from a 2003 state law, AB 844, mandating tire efficiency rules. The commission projects the changes will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2 million tons annually, equivalent to taking around 400,000 cars off the road.
  • The state estimates drivers will save approximately $1 billion annually on refueling costs. While efficient tires may cost $6 to $26 more per set, the commission projects net savings of $153 over the tire's lifetime.
  • Manufacturers including Goodyear and the United States Tire Manufacturers Assn. expressed concerns regarding enforcement and costs. Addressing industry feedback, the commission included exclusions for specific categories like winter and competition tires.
  • Regulations take effect in two stages, with the first phase starting in 2029 and a stricter standard in 2033. Commissioner Nancy Skinner noted that 30% of tires currently available for sale already comply with the 2033 requirements.
