Defenseman Luca Cagnoni scored his first career NHL goal 3:14 into overtime Thursday, lifting the San Jose Sharks to a 4-3 season-opening victory over the Florida Panthers before a sellout crowd of 17,435 at SAP Center.
The Sharks built a commanding 3-0 lead in the second period behind Mason Marchment's first-period goal and two from Will Smith, each assisted by Captain Macklin Celebrini.
Florida rallied to force overtime after Eetu Luostarinen scored twice and Matthew Tkachuk added a goal during the third period, erasing the three-goal deficit in a 17-second span.
Panthers Captain Aleksander Barkov exited the game in the second period after falling awkwardly while battling for the puck; Coach Paul Maurice said Barkov will be re-evaluated Friday.
The Sharks host Los Angeles on Saturday night, while the Panthers continue their four-game road trip with matchups against Anaheim on Sunday and Los Angeles on Tuesday.
