Cadets recount their experience subduing Old Dominion University attacker

Army ROTC cadets say their quick response stopped the gunman and helped save lives, and several later received Purple Hearts.

  • On March 12, Old Dominion University Army ROTC cadets subdued Mohamed Jalloh after he opened fire in their classroom at Constant Hall. The cadets spoke publicly about the incident for the first time in a 17-minute video posted Wednesday to the Army ROTC YouTube page.
  • Jalloh, an Army National Guard veteran, had previously been convicted of aiding the Islamic State and served about eight years of an 11-year sentence before being released two-and-a-half years early. He enrolled at Old Dominion University in summer 2025 and was on supervised release at the time of the attack.
  • Lunging at the gunman, Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Shah allowed cadets to disarm and neutralize the shooter. Cadet Louis Ancheta, despite a chest wound, joined others in stabbing the attacker, stating, "I just go in there, just start stabbing him."
  • Cadets provided emergency first aid to Shah and Ancheta following the struggle. While Ancheta survived and was transported to hospital for surgery, Shah died from his injuries—an incident the FBI classified as a terrorist attack.
  • Safety concerns regarding Constant Hall have resurfaced within the ODU Faculty Senate, citing a 2024 email about potential classroom access issues. The ODU Board of Visitors rebuked the Senate, suggesting they were using the tragedy to advance political motives against university leadership.
